Where 16:9 is used
16:9 is the default widescreen shape of modern video and computing: YouTube uploads, broadcast and streaming TV, laptop and desktop monitors, presentation slides and most projectors. If you are exporting video or designing a full-screen layout and no ratio is specified, 16:9 is almost always the safe choice.
The math behind 16:9
A 16:9 frame is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall. To find the height from a known width, use height = width × 9 ÷ 16; to find the width from a height, use width = height × 16 ÷ 9. A resolution is exactly 16:9 when both numbers divide down to 16 and 9 — for example 2560 and 1440 share a divisor of 160, giving 16:9.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 16:9 aspect ratio in pixels?
16:9 is a shape, not a fixed pixel count. The most common 16:9 resolutions are 1280×720 (720p HD), 1920×1080 (1080p Full HD), 2560×1440 (1440p QHD), 3840×2160 (4K UHD) and 7680×4320 (8K). Any width divisible by 16 works — multiply it by 9 and divide by 16 to get the matching height.
How do I calculate 16:9 height from a width?
Multiply the width by 9 and divide by 16. For a width of 1600 the height is 1600 × 9 ÷ 16 = 900, so 1600×900 is a true 16:9 size. Enter any width above and this calculator returns the exact 16:9 height instantly.
Is 1920×1080 a 16:9 ratio?
Yes. 1920 and 1080 both divide by 120, reducing to 16:9. It is the standard Full HD resolution used by YouTube, most TVs and the majority of computer monitors.
How do I convert 4:3 to 16:9?
Keep the height and widen the frame, or keep the width and shorten the height — there is no distortion-free crop that fits both. To letterbox a 4:3 video into a 16:9 frame, add pillar bars on the left and right. Our 4:3 calculator (linked below) shows the matching 4:3 sizes.
