Where 4:3 is used

4:3 is the classic "fuller" shape from before widescreen took over. It survives today in tablets (iPads are 4:3), Micro Four Thirds and many smartphone cameras, document scanning, slide decks, projectors and retro gaming. Because it is taller relative to its width than 16:9, it shows more vertical content — handy for reading, forms and portrait-leaning photos.

The math behind 4:3

A 4:3 frame is 4 units wide for every 3 units tall. Height from a width is height = width × 3 ÷ 4; width from a height is width = height × 4 ÷ 3. A resolution is exactly 4:3 when both numbers reduce to 4 and 3 — 1600 and 1200 share a divisor of 400, giving 4:3.
