Keyboard Tester
Press any key. If it lights up, it works. Test every key on your keyboard in seconds.
How this keyboard test works
Every time you press a key, your keyboard sends a signal that your operating system passes to the browser as a key event. This page listens for those events and lights up the matching key on the virtual keyboard. Green means the key was pressed and released normally. If a physical key press never lights anything up, the key (or its connection) is not sending a signal at all.
Common keyboard problems and what they mean
- Key never registers: dirt under the keycap, a dead switch, or a damaged membrane. Try cleaning under the cap first.
- Key registers twice per press ("chatter"): common on worn mechanical switches. Some keyboard software can add a debounce delay.
- Several keys stop working at once: often one row/column on the keyboard matrix โ usually a controller or cable issue, not the individual keys.
- Keys type the wrong character: the hardware is fine; check your OS keyboard layout (for example QWERTY vs AZERTY).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I test if my keyboard keys work?
Click anywhere on this page, then press each key on your keyboard. Working keys light up green on the on-screen keyboard and appear in the key log. A key that never lights up is not being detected by your computer.
A key lights up here but does not type letters. What is wrong?
If the tester detects the key, the hardware works โ the problem is software: check your keyboard layout and language settings, or the app you are typing in. If it does not light up here either, the switch or connection is likely faulty.
Can I test a laptop keyboard with this tool?
Yes. The tester works with laptop keyboards, external USB and Bluetooth keyboards, and mechanical keyboards alike. Note that some laptop function keys (volume, brightness) are handled by firmware and may not send a key event to the browser.
Why does my Print Screen or media key not register?
Some keys are intercepted by the operating system before they reach the browser โ Print Screen, sleep, and some media keys are common examples. That does not mean the key is broken.
What is anti-ghosting and can I test it here?
Ghosting is when pressing several keys at once causes some presses to be missed. Hold down multiple keys together โ every key that stays highlighted is being registered simultaneously. Gaming keyboards typically handle 6 or more simultaneous keys.
