Fixing a mic that will not work
If the meter stays flat, work through the usual suspects in order: confirm the right device is selected here, unmute your system input, and grant the browser microphone permission via the padlock icon in the address bar. On a headset, check for a physical mute switch or a half-inserted jack. If it works here but not in a call app, the app itself has the wrong input selected or lacks microphone permission — the hardware is fine.

How do I test if my microphone is working?
Click "Start microphone test" and allow access when your browser asks. Speak normally — the level meter should move with your voice. If the bar stays flat while you talk, your mic is muted, disconnected, or the wrong input device is selected.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Nothing is recorded, saved, or sent to any server — the audio never leaves your device.
The meter does not move. What is wrong?
Check three things: the correct microphone is selected in the dropdown, your system volume/input is not muted, and the browser has microphone permission (click the padlock in the address bar). On desktops, a loose 3.5 mm jack or a physical mute switch on a headset is a common cause.
Why does the browser ask for permission every time?
Browsers require explicit permission to access a microphone for privacy. You can set the site to "Always allow" via the padlock icon in the address bar so it stops asking on future visits.
Can I test a headset or USB microphone?
Yes. Any microphone the operating system recognizes appears in the device dropdown — built-in, USB, Bluetooth headset or audio interface. Pick it from the list and the meter switches to that input.
